The critical role of media gatekeepers in Ethiopia’s ongoing transitional justice and national dialogue efforts was the focus of discussion during the Editors’ Breakfast Meeting held Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the Best Western Plus Hotel.

The meeting featured a presentation by Misganaw Mulugeta, who was a member of the working groups for both initiatives. News editors and journalists evaluated the engagement of media houses in supporting these nationwide milestones.

Participants unanimously expressed that media’s performance has fallen short of expectations, despite its vital role in fostering public understanding and accountability. Editors acknowledged some positive cooperation with media but highlighted challenges in communication and the lack of easily accessible channels to enable free and fair reporting on the processes.

The editors emphasized the need for balanced and responsible coverage, asserting that media should be an integral part of these efforts. Misganaw’s presentation underscored the importance of empowering media to act as a bridge between policymakers and the public, enhancing transparency and trust in these transformative initiatives.

The meeting, organized by the Editors’ Guild of Ethiopia (EGE) in collaboration with International Media Support, concluded with a commitment to facilitate ongoing consultations with the offices handling transitional justice and national dialogue. This, according to EGE representatives, aims to address communication gaps and ensure the media’s potential is fully harnessed for the smooth and effective implementation of the processes.

This gathering reaffirmed the pivotal role of media in shaping Ethiopia’s path toward reconciliation and democracy while advocating for greater inclusivity and collaboration between media stakeholders and policymakers.
